The Jewish Music Institute (JMI) based at SOAS, University of London, is an international focus, bringing the rich tapestry of Jewishmusic from its ancient past, right up to the present within reach ofeveryone in multicultural Britain today. The driving force for Jewish music in the UK, JMI supports the first ever full time lectureship in Jewish Music at a mainstream University. It facilitates the widest possible participation through University courses as well as workshops, evening classes and summer schools for the public and live performance in the country's leading concert venues. It embraces both secular and sacred music of Jewish communities of Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Oriental origin also the music of Israel and the Middle East and the music of the early 20th century that Nazi policies tried to obliterate. It has established a Jewish Music Library with recordings, manuscripts and scores available to musicians, scholars, teachers and the public.
