Jewish Music Evening Classes at SOAS 2004/2005

Open to professional and amateur instrumentalists and singers and those interested to know more about Jewish musical heritage and culture and learn the Yiddish language

Classes take place at SOAS, University of London

Klezmer Music: Tuesdays and Sundays
Tutor: Ilana Cravitz and guest tutors

Sophie SolomonTuesday evenings: Beginner and intermediate courses
Sundays: Sessions for more experienced players with international tutors, including Merlin Shepherd and Sophie Solomon (pictured).

Yiddish Language: Mondays and Tuesdays
Yiddish language study opens the door to a rich heritage and culture and helps with the pronunciation and interpretation of Yiddish song.
Beginners: Tuesdays, Intermediate: Mondays
Tutor: Dr Khayke Beruriah Wiegand Three terms: 4 October— 28 March, 6.30—8.30pm. In association with SOAS Language Centre and The Spiro Ark. The Spiro Ark also teaches Advanced Yiddish and organises many Yiddish cultural programmes in association with JMI.

Liturgical Music Two courses each week covering the history of Jewish sacred music and practical cantorial study.
Wednesdays: Cantor Josef Levine (Term 1) and Victor Tunkel (Terms 2 and 3)
Thursdays: Practical Chazanut. Cantor Stephen Robins

Jewish Song School: Thursdays
Jewish Song School Director Ruti Halvani

Ruti HalvaniExperts in their fields guide you through the joys and sorrows of Jewish life as depicted by poets and musicians over the centuries. Sing Jewish folk and art songs in Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish, Judeo-Arabic and Hebrew. The course is for professional and amateur singers. Also voice consultation and vocal coaching.
