Cantorial Classes 2004/2005

Two courses each week covering the history of Jewish sacred music and practical cantorial study. Students may take one or both of these courses. Students taking the practical course are advised to take the history course


Wednesdays 6.45—8.45pm
Term 1: (4 weeks during November only)
The Psalmodic Approach to Prayer Chant

Tutor: Cantor Joseph Levine (Philadelphia)
A course of 4 sessions given by visiting Cantor Levine, well known specialist, tutor at the Academy for the Jewish Religion, New York and author of a books on the subject

Term 2 and 3 from January:
Victor Tunkel
will begin a course on the History and Development of Jewish Liturgical Music

Thursdays 6.458.45pm
Practical Chazanut:

Tutor: Cantor Stephen Robins,
A three-term course on the Sabbath service: prayer modes (nusach), congregational melodies (old and new) and cantorial recitatives.

Also one-to-one or small group tuition in Voice Production, Sight singing (learn to read music) and Cantorial Coaching

Fees and Registration:

- The Psalmodic Approach to Prayer Chant ( 4 classes only):
£50 (or £15 per session)
- Practical Chazanut (a three term course on the Sabbath Service):
per term: 10 sessions £130, Students £75 (if paid in advance by the first session each term)
- The History and Development of Jewish Liturgical Music:
per term: 10 sessions £130, Students £75 (if paid in advance by the first session each term)
