Exploring Yiddish Drama and Literature
posted 17 September 2003

Monthly events of the JMI International Forum for Yiddish Culture in association with The Spiro Ark.

Thursday evenings 8.00—10.00

Room G51 SOAS, University of London, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG

The newly established JMI International Forum for Yiddish Culture, inaugurated at London University and at the House of Commons in July 2003 has set up a series of Illustrated lectures, workshops and performances embracing the rich treasury of plays, poetry and literature in Yiddish. This series provides an opportunity of learning about the history of the Yiddish Theatre in London from the Yiddish Theatre historian, David Mazower, the great -grandson of the great Yiddish writer Sholem Asch (16 October), of working with writer and comedian David Schneider (13 November) an outstanding theatre director of the younger generation and of spending an evening in the company of Anna Tzelniker (2004, date tbc), one of our greatest living actors from the heyday of Yiddish theatre in London; and this could lead to a regular Yiddish drama group being set up in the future.

All costs will be kept as low as possible to encourage those interested in Yiddish to come along.

Yiddish drama masterclass: Anski's unfinished play Day and Night
Thursday 13 November 8.00pm

David Schneider, actor, writer and theatre director will conduct the first of his occasional series of workshops, trying out scenes from classical and lesser known Yiddish plays with experienced Yiddish linguists and actors and kibitzing (interruptions) from Helen Beer, Lecturer in Yiddish at University College London. The audience will understand and learn a great deal even if not yet fluent in Yiddish. As Dave says, 'we can inch towards getting a little theatre troupe together at our own pace'.
