Hot Beats on Rye 2004 @ The Spitz
added 21 July 2004

JMI presents three concerts of 'Intercontinental Klezmer' in August with exciting new bands from New Zealand, New York, Israel and London, drawing on influences from the Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jewish Heritage and from many continents.

Wednesday 4 August 2004 , doors open 7.30, band on 8.30
The Jews Brothers Band
Irreverent, iconoclastic, wickedly playful and on the edge, The Jews Brothers Band, has a huge cult following in Australasia. With accordion, mandolin, soprano and tenor saxophones, melodica, double-bass, zydeco metal washboard and exotic percussion this famously hard-driving five-piece band features wild Eastern European dance medleys, neo-40s' swing and hot klezmer-gypsy tunes, all performed with mad 'jazz' improvisations and a charismatic stage presence. Part of UK Tour.
Supporting Band: Nomadica — a young Indie-Klezmer band that draws on old Klezmer melodies and style, fusing them with Indian rhythms.
Presented by JMI in association with The Spitz

Thursday 5 August 2004, open 7.30, band on 8.30
The Strauss Warschauer Duo
Deborah Strauss (violin/accordion/vocals)
Jeff Warschauer (mandolin/guitar/horn/vocals) from New York
Members of Boston’s Klezmer Conservatory Band, Deborah and Jeff create a dynamic atmosphere, delicate and refined as well as exuberant and foot-stomping. with their exceptional playing and singing. Two of the worlds most sought after and celebrated performers of the Jewish klezmer tradition they have been on stage across America and Europe and are sought after teachers at klezmer conventions.
Presented by JMI and Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of JMI Jewish Music Summerschools at SOAS University of London

Monday 30 August 2004, doors open 7.30, band on 8.30
Shlomo Bar
Shlomo Bar, singer and percussionist of the seminal Israeli band, Habrera Hativeet, on a rare visit to the UK says that 'music is medicine to open all the places that are closed in our mind and in our soul'. He draws on his Sephardi, Arabic and Mizrahi heritage and with oud player, Ilan Ben-Ami, brings medicine for a troubled Middle East
Supporting Band: Nomadica a young Indie-Klezmer band that draws on old Klezmer melodies and style, fusing them with Indian rhythms.
