A structured, intensive course for instrumentalists and singers in Klezmer music and Yiddish song and dance with:

  11. Merlin Shepherd, Clarinet and leader of the dance band

Learn the style, rhythm, ornamentation and repertoire of Eastern European Jewish song and party music in workshops and masterclasses.

Now in its fourth year, KlezFest London is ideal for those proficient on their instruments, regardless of whether you have played klezmer before. But is is specially geared to cater for those with considerable experience in Klezmer and take them further. There are also special masterclasses for existing ensembles. Expert tuition in instrumental and ensemble playing.

JMI Summer School of Jewish Song
Sunday 8—Thursday 12 August 2004

Special this year is a complete parallel course of Jewish song with workshops and masterclasses focusing on interpretation, context and pronunciation for professional and amateur singers. The Yiddish song programme will be run by New York's doyen of Yiddish Song, Adrienne Cooper, along with Shura Lipovsky from Amsterdam and Paulina Achkinazi-Shepherd from Eastern Europe. We also present workshops for singers on Sephardi song with Yvonne Behar, Judeo-Arabic song with Sara Manasseh, Berlin and Paris Cabaret with Alexandra Yaron, Jewish art song with Ruti Halvani and where Jewish song is going today with Judith Silver.

Timetable: Sunday 8—Thursday 12 August

Sunday registration from 10.00—12.20 in the Brunei Gallery Cafe, ground Floor, Brunei Gallery Building.
Each student to meet the faculty on a one to one basis for a brief interview. Then picnic, bands, dancing and singing in Regents Park.

Am1: 9.15—10.30 Yiddish Dance For all. Dance teaching by Michael Alpert, dance band (Kle-Zemer from St Petersburg and others) led by Merlin Shepherd

Am2: 10.35—11.05 Half hour Lecture Session a primer on klezmer in 4 sessions given by one lecturer per day Michael, Christian, Jeff and Deborah. Singers have their own lecture

Break 11.05—11. 30 Coffee break. Café Area BG building

Am3 11.30—12.45 Teaching rooms: Hands-on playing in smaller groups based on ability and experience (Singers Repertoire class Adrienne)

Lunch: 12.45—2.00

Pm1: 2.00—3.15
Instrumental classes (here singers have speciality workshops, different each day - Sephardi, Judeo Arabic, Cabaret and Art songs)

Tea: 3.153.45 Tea Break Café Area BG building

Pm2: 3.45—5.00 Ensembles (Singers can split into different groups with Adrienne, Shura and
Polina)

Pm3: 5.15—6.30 Chorus /or discussion with one or two faculty members each day /or Extra instrumental tuition as desired

Supper: 7.00—8.00

Evenings 8—11 Short performances by visiting bands then jam session and dancing
