Apply for a Bursary
modified March 29, 2010

You can apply for a Bursary or Scholarship to study at JMI summer courses

Any instrumentalist or singer who wants to study klezmer music or Yiddish song and dance – or a person who wants to study the Yiddish Language - and who would find difficulty in paying the full fees may apply for financial help.

To apply please fill in the registration form and attach a letter (or email), explaining your need for financial assistance and why you would like to do these courses.

We have created bursaries in the names of former students and teachers Jim Marcovitch, klezmer accordionist from London and Michael Kahan, klezmer Fiddler from Manchester, who have sadly died before their time, as well as Majer Bogdanski – revered Yiddish composer and singer. The family and friends of each of them have got together with JMI and raised funds to enable others to study Klezmer and Yiddish at JMI Summer Schools.

Attending these courses gave Jim and Michael a great deal of joy and enabled them to perform professionally – giving, in turn, so much pleasure to others.  Majer who lived to over 90 was loved by all those he taught, sung to, or mentored. You can read about them by clicking on their names.

A number of people who attend JMI Fundraising functions have also donated to the scholarship fund. Such events include the annual JMI Joke Lunches – chaired by Lord Janner and with prime joke teller Michael Grade CBE, both of whom, (with Zalmen Mlotek of New York) are Vice Presidents of the Jewish Music Institute’s International Forum for Yiddish Culture.

You too can donate to the klezmer and Yiddish scholarship fund in their names by clicking the button below:
