Jmi KlezFest ‘graduates’ from Birmingham to Edinburgh take klezmer to Birmingham ArtsFest, Folk and Dance Festivals, Folk Trains, Ceilidhs, Museums, Universities and Pubs – not forgetting Weddings and Barmitzvahs!

Klezmer weekends Derbyshire:


Northern Klezmer Band ‘The Klatch’

Their enthusiasm for klezmer led the several ‘local’ players (all KlezFest ‘graduates’) to create a special band which they called ‘The Klatsh’ (meaning an informal conversation, chat or chatter)  
Pictured above are members of the band  Phil Tomlinson (song and guitar) from Matlock in Derbyshire, Simon Carlyle (tuba and sousaphone) from Edinburgh, Sue Shortland Webb (violin)  from Birmingham, Adrian Dobson (accordion) and Judith Plowman (dance leader)  - both from Glossop

Phil Tomlinson with a powerful baritone voice had been developing the singing strand in the band as well as making Yiddish song, klezmer music and dance popular in Derbyshire. Phil says: ‘In September 2007 we took a wholly Derbyshire klezmer band to the Wirksworth Festival near Matlock, and played at four venues around the town including the market square. The band consisted of clarinet, flute, accordion and guitars, and we were supported by our dance teacher, who encouraged participation.

The Jewish Music Institute is an independent Arts organisation based at SOAS, University of London. It is an international focus bringing the ancient yet contemporary musical culture of the Jews to the mainstream British cultural, academic and social life.
