Tuesday Evening from 7 - 9pm
Room G52, SOAS, Thornhaugh Street, London WC1H 0XG
Spring Term 6 January - 17 March 09

Join SOAS Klezmer Classes and learn how to play Klezmer, the music of the Jews of Eastern Europe.
Whether you have a background in Classical, World Music, Jazz or Folk, there are aspects of Klezmer that will appeal. There is so much to discover. During the course you will learn:

  • how to make your instrument sing, cry or laugh in a typical Klezmer style
  • the modes that make this music a real combination of Eastern and Western musical traditions
  • the rhythms and dances that make this music ideal for parties, weddings and good times
  • how to play in a Klezmer ensemble

and much more…

All instruments welcome - however musicians must have a good grasp of their instruments - minimum grade 3 level or equivalent.

Classes will be taught by Ilana Cravitz, author of the recently published book "The Klezmer Fiddle, A How To Guide", (OUP). Ilana has extensive knowledge of Klezmer music and its development as well as substantial performance and teaching experience.
