A Wild Wind Weekend at Liverpool University
Crossing boundaries and breaking down barriers between the classical and folk traditions
a two-day workshop Sunday 9 and Monday 10 March 2008 culminating with:

The programme is presented by the Department of Music, Liverpool University, part of their Different Voices programme for Liverpool 08
in association with the Jewish Music Institute, SOAS University of London

Wind players (grade 6 and above) are invited to join Liverpool University wind band for a two-day intensive of workshops culminating in a performance focused on traditional and composed repertoire of Eastern European Jewish party music. (see timetable)
Students from classical or folk traditions will have the chance to learn from, and play in concert alongside some of the foremost Klezmer revival teachers and practitioners in the world. Special guests Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars from the USA.
Work will include rhythm style and ornaments and be both on and off the page with ear training a speciality and a chance to investigate the actual dances that go with the music.

  • introduction to klezmer - what is it? what is its context?
  • perfecting Jewish ornaments and rhythms
  • work on the chosen Jewish composed repertoire for Wind Band
  • learning klezmer by ear
  • playing for - or dancing the Yiddish dances for all musicians?
  • composing in the klezmer genre
  • participating in a concert with the Frank London's Klezmer Brass Allstars

£30 full rate £17.50 student rate (includes scores of the works to be performed)
