Israeli Music > Articles Library of Music by Israeli Composers The Jewish Music Institute Forum for Israeli Music’s (FIM) aim of promoting awareness of Israeli music has been given a strong boost by a recent initiative at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM). An exciting collection of musical scores from Israel has been brought to the UK and placed in the library at the Academy, making this music for the first time easily accessible to all Academy students. This initiative is thanks to the cellist Sagi Hartov, former Fellow at the Royal Academy of Music and who at the time was helping out at the Cultural Department of he Israeli Embassy. The collections of 94 works spans four generations of Israel’s leading composers, from the pioneers of the 1930s and 40s, through to the most recent works by leading contemporary figures such as George Bardanshvili and Noa Guy.
The music reflects a range of different moods, styles and media: solo and accompanied woodwind, brass, strings, voice, and also piano solo and forms a strong basis for further expansion in the future. Allied to the scores is a set of CDs of Israeli works, including a newly compiled sampler of 12 movements as a cross section of Israeli music. The sampler will be given to all the colleges and to students. The gift form the Israel Music Institute in Jerusalem and the Cultural Department of the Embassy of Israel, is aimed to form a resource for all students in the UK. FIM plans to arrange lectures and masterclasses by outstanding Israel musicians and other experts to introduce the works in context and illuminate aspects of interpretation. This collection may also simulate a new Intercollegiate Competition under the aegis of the JMI Forum for Israeli Music – a solo or chamber music competition which would be open to students at all the UK colleges and take place at a central venue. Colleges interested in participating would also receive a set of scores for their students. Contact:
