Workshops & Classes

JMI is dedicated to education and learning. We run courses throughout the year in different aspects of Jewish Music from Liturgical, to Yiddish and Sephardi song, Klezmer and Middle Eastern music.

JMI’s famous full immersion course in Yiddish Language and Culture for people of all ages, levels and backgrounds – where even complete beginners learn to speak, read, write and even dream in Yiddish in a week. Classes are held at 4 levels, led, as ever by Helen (Khayele) Beer with her popular team of  Sonya Pinkusowitz, Annick Prime-Margules and  Lily Kahn and with Barry Davis presenting films. Shura Lipovsky, Director of the JMI Yiddish Song School, will be teaching a daily session of Yiddish through song. You will also be amazed at how much you are able to learn about reading writing and speaking Yiddish in only one week.

When: Sunday 7- Friday 12 August 2016, 9.30-6.30
Where: SOAS Vernon Square Campus WC1X 9EW

JMI’s annual Yiddish Song School is for advanced singers who wish to embrace the rich Yiddish song repertoire. Mornings are spent studying the vocabulary, syntax, grammar and pronunciation of the language with the outstanding language of teachers of JMI’s Ot Azoy!  Experience has shown that being able to understand and speak a little Yiddish adds enormously to a singer’s musical interpretation. The afternoons will be devoted to masterclasses and workshops in style and approach with some of the world’s most revered teachers and performers of Yiddish song, Shura Lipovsky (Amsterdam), Rachel Weston (London) and Karsten Troyke (Berlin).

When: Sunday 7 – Friday 12 August 2016, 9.30 – 20.00
Where: SOAS Vernon Square Campus WC1X 9EW
