JMI Online: Composer Jeremy Arden – Inventions In Solitude

Details

Date:
Wednesday 24th February
Time:
7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Event Category:

Inventions in Solitude, binds together old and new work, including several pieces Jeremy Arden composed while in lockdown and his elemental and explosive piano cycle, Infinite Sets and Double Binds, composed in 1999 and performed by the extraordinary Matthew Schellhorn.

In November 2019, a year in advance, Jeremy Arden booked the beautiful Holywell Music Room in Oxford, the oldest purpose-built concert hall in the country.

“When the pandemic struck I thought it would be over by November 2020 but with days to go, a second lockdown was announced and all theatres shut. Amazingly, one of our team noticed a clause in the government rules that allowed broadcasts to go ahead under strict conditions and so we quickly adapted our strategy and the result is this film.”

Piano trio – “True Self”, is performed by Ilya Chetverikov, Natasha Sachsenmeier and Timothée Botbol.

A new arrangement of Jeremy’s composition “Bayo’s Way, (1993)” originally for electric tuba and 9 brass instruments, will be performed (on just one piano!) by the fabulous Maki Sekiya.

There is also music by the wonderful Ligeti and the glorious Mieczyslaw Weinberg, a composer held in the highest regard by none other than Shostakovich, whose Jewish songs are the jewel in the crown of this concert.
